After an almost perfect night of camping, I awoke to this view from the cot in my tent. Sigh.

The calm didn’t last long though…Thursday began with a trip to the famous St Louis zoo. The zoo is a beautiful park filled with a huge variety of animals. And it’s FREE! We walked right in the front gate, and quickly mapped a route through the park that would allow us to move fairly quickly through and see mostly animals we don’t have at the Nashville zoo. As a matter of fact, we moved so quickly and efficiently through the zoo that not one of us remembered to take a picture! We all enjoyed the “Apes” section the most. We’d never seen a gorilla, orangutan, or chimpanzee in person before! Fascinating to watch them move around. Great place… Guess you’ll just have to take our word for it! 😊 OR check out https://www.stlzoo.org/

After the zoo, we hit the road toward Carthage, Mo. where we booked a reservation at the Boots Court, an old Route 66 roadside motel.

When our GPS said we’d arrived at our destination, we were slightly taken back by the scale and condition of the place we’d read so many glowing reviews of.

We elected to go through with the reservation, embracing the “route 66 experience”. We were SO glad we did! What a delightful experience! Check out their guest book! People travel from all over the world to experience the Americana along the Route. Many stops along Route 66 have guest books like these with so many different scripts and languages…. So neat!

The charm of the Boots Court Motel began with Debbie, the on site manager who was not only the friendliest person we’ve encountered on our trip so far, But very knowledgeable about the history and sites along the route and in the area! She booked us into two rooms, one of which was room #10, the motel’s claim to fame. Clark Gable stayed in this room as he passed through Carthage in 1947. I’m sure many of my friends are aware of how I LOVE old movies and this absolutely delighted me! I was downright giddy! Here’s a little tour of our quaint quarters.

After settling into our charming rooms (and using a real key),

Debbie reminded us that we had just enough time to swing over and catch the new Aladdin movie at another Carthage route 66 treasure, the Route 66 Drive in.

It’s large screen and neon wrapped ticket booth were captivating, the movie was great and concessions were cheap! More info here http://66drivein.com/

We fell into our beds exhausted, but with smiles on our faces and left the room’s radio playing forties music softly in the background on all night long. It was just about perfect!

David will pick up here to describe our Saturday!

Thanks for following along!
